MCO and working from home

With the current Covid 19 crisis, businesses are faced with the challenge of having employees work from home.

With Sage 300, there are several ways that you may be able to access your data remotely.

• The first option is of course to access Sage 300 through the Web UI. This of course depends on the version you have as well as if the Sage 300 Web Screens have been setup and that this has been setup in such a way that you can access it from outside the office. Do note that when using Sage 300 web screens over an external network or the internet, data must be protected with security measures such as Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
• Set up a terminal server that holds your software and all of its data allowing users to remote in to the server and work within the software. (See Deployment Options)
• Set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) so that users can access their work computer through Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) from a home computer
• Install your software on a laptop or PC that you take home with you and work using a backup of the data.
  Note: If multiple people will need to access the data this may not be the best option because you would need to re-enter the data from all users when you are able to get back to the office.

Regardless of which option you opt for, here are some precautions you need to put in place:

• Have an internet and anti virus solution in place. Just having an anti virus solution is not sufficient. As we are on the internet all the time, we should ensure that our connection is secure. Paid solutions are recommended, free ones do not provide comprehensive protection.
• Backup your data regularly. Always backup your data. Keep multiple copies of your backup. DO NOT backup data to the same place where your data is. Keep backups in a separate location so that in case your computer becomes infected, or your hard disk crashes, your data is safe.
• Remind employees to not respond to suspicious emails or click on links in there. Unless you are very certain you know who the sender is, do not click on links or download attachments. or respond to them. Keep in mind that these emails may look like they are coming from someone you know. If in doubt, call them to confirm before doing anything. This also applies to links on the internet.
